Looking After Your Laptop Battery
Help Desk - Protect Your PC

Laptop batteries are improving all the time, with smaller physical dimensions, less weight and most importantly longer duration.  Many companies are now quoting times in excess of 5 hours with some as much as 10 hours.Whilst the timing is largely due to the test conditions applied, it has to be said that on the whole things are improving.  Most consumer laptops currently have a range of between two and four hours which just 5 years ago would have been 1 - 2 hours.

Maintenance of the battery pack is crucial to its long term health, here are a few pointers to help keep yours in good condition.

  • If you use your laptop whilst connected to the mains for prolonged periods, it is recommended that once a week you disconnect the power lead and use the machine on the battery until it is low then reconnect and allow to charge.  This cycling will keep the battery in good condition.
  • If the machine is not going to be used for extended periods then remove the battery before storage.  It is best to charge the battery first and then use the machine for a while until the battery is at approximately 50% charge, then place in storage.  It is best to store them between 25 and 30 degrees Centigrade.
  • If you only use the machine for 10 - 15 mins per day to check your emails etc, then use it on the battery and only charge when the battery is low.  This will allow the battery to cycle properly.
  • If you use external periperals such as Hard Drives, CD Writers etc, unplug them when they are not in use, this will reduce the load on the battery and prolong it's life.
  • Do not leave your laptop in a car or anywhere in direct sunlight.

The Lithium Ion batteries used in most modern laptops will survive for a reasonable length of time if looked after, following our few simple rules will help.
